Adrienne Pitts had the bright idea to bring the richly colored powder used for the Hindu Holi festival to Phoot Camp this year. Everyone took a turn getting pelted in the face with the super saturated pigment for her portrait series (one of which is on sale as a limited edition print in the Phoot Store).

Color Wars by Steph Goralnick taken at Phoot Camp 2012

So I know I’ve taken quite a break from tumblr, but I just returned from my 4th Phoot Camp, and spending a long weekend in the woods at summer camp with 34 other photographers was the epic creative jolt I needed to get shooting (and more importantly, editing & posting) again.

The idea for this image was loosely inspired by the American summer camp tradition of “color wars”. To get a really good idea of what that is, I suggest you give a listen to the incredible episode of This American Life entitled “Notes on Camp”. You can stream it for free here. Big thanks to all the Phooters pictured here for entertaining my crazy idea for some colorful mayhem. It’s such an amazing feeling seeing an idea come to life like this.

Oh, just a 6-Course meal served on the L Train. What did YOU do this weekend?

Quite possibly the ballsiest interpretation of the “popup restaurant” phenomenon to date: 12 guests were treated to a full 6 courses on an NYC subway commute from 8th Avenue to Canarsie, with a new dish being served every third stop. Courses were plated by teams either on the platform, or in the train itself, and served to guests on custom-built straphanger tables. The exquisitely planned and executed event went off (amazingly) without a hitch. The Great Gatsby was read, diners were stuffed, onlookers drooled. (see the full photo set here)

6th Avenue: Hamchi Crudo, Bone Marrow, Trout Roe, Laproaig, Sweet Lime
3rd Avenue: Foie en Brioche, Port Wine, Raisin
Lorimer Street: Ramp Soup, Black Garlic, Cippolini, Morel, Thyme
Morgan Avenue: Petit Filet Mignon, Pomme Puree, Asparagus
Bushwick Avenue: Pepper Jam, St Andre
Sutter Avenue: Chocolate & Gold Leaf Panna Cotta, Raspberry Coulis

Teufelsberg by Steph Goralnick.

With a name meaning “devils’ mountain”, Teufelsberg is a fantastically decayed remnant of former West Berlin. Built atop a mountain of WWII rubble dumped upon the exploded remains of a subterranean Nazi military technical school, it served as a cold war spy station of the NSA. A bizarre geodesic wonderland designed for supersecret intelligence gathering, turned into a hauntingly weird playground for excellent photojaunts and exercises with your own echo.

Hey Steph! Good to see you pop up on my dashboard (with attribution!). Berlin looks awesome, and New York misses you.
