Quiet on the set! No really. Be quiet.

From a weekend last summer I spent at a lake house in New Jersey with Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson.

No, really. I had the honor and the pleasure to fill in for set photographer Niko Tavernise for a few days during the shooting of The Messenger (which opened yesterday!). If you’ve ever seen the movie poster for a little film called, oh, THE WRESTLER, then you have seen Niko’s work. Having never worked on a film set before, it was intriguing to see the amazing array of talent and the herculean effort that goes into producing the final product. Being responsible for capturing it all is a thrilling task, what with all the excitement, creativity, celebrities, not to mention professionally perfect lighting. But man, is it grueling! Looooong days, annnnngry actors (who apparently all hate set photographers), it is not for the faint of heart.

Woody Harrelson was actually quite pleasant though. He came over to introduce himself, and messed around with my camera a bit, taking pictures of Ben.

a quick set of business cards i whipped up for laura, who makes delicious treats that are still super tasty despite their lack of gluten (promise! i’m not just saying that because she’s my friend). you can sample her wares today at the WORD bookstore in greenpoint. if you miss it (sorry for the late post!) you can also often find her at the greenpoint food market.

And then i took their picture from my living room in Brooklyn (it was 7pm).
They (Nate Bolt and Laura Brunow Miner) were on a rooftop in San Francisco (at 4pm).

“How?!”, you may ask? Satellites? Time machines? No. Ladies and gentlemen, it was THE MAGIC OF BOLTRON, and a cross-country collaborative photography project he dreamed up called the Shutter Exchange.

So excited to finally have my very own piece of Rock Cakes (not to mention, it’s my very first diamond, whee)! This sweet, sparkly skull is just one of the many cute quirky characters that frequent her designs.

Other faves include just about everything in the whimsically witty Proverbial series: playful takes in precisous metals of phrases such as “shooting star” or “every cloud has a silver lining”

Even as a graphic designer, many of the font-related trivia questions that were part of the AIGA’s “The Type is RIght” game-show challenge were completely beyond me, but everyone was excited to support Andy and his colleagues Jonathan Hoefler and Sara Soskolne from Hoefler & Frere-Jones as they blazed the road to victory. A nerdalicious evening, it was amusing to explain the few of the designey inside-jokes that weren’t over my head to the bewildered non-designer friends among us:

“Uh, why did everyone just laugh?”

“OMG, because the guy on the opposing team designed the font that the question is about, HAHAHA!”

In an effort to bring sportsfan-like enthusiasm to a geeky event, Brian and Suzette even went so far as to create a set of brilliant signs for our cheering section. Standouts include “HELVETICA SUCKS” (set in arial) and “Corona and Wingdings” (mmm, wingdings).

The making of my lab rat hat at the House of Yes. Thanks so much to Laura Clark for her superawesome sewing skills!

Do you want to make something costumetacular but don’t have a studio full of sewing machinery? Only sortakinda/notreally know how to sew and could use some guidance? Know your way around a Singer but prefer to work in the company of like-minded folks? Just want to hang out in a crazy room full of scraps of glittery fabric and monster heads and an explosion of feathers and trimming and pins and needles and buttons and fake eyeballs? Check out the Make Fun Studio at the House of Yes in Bushwick, Brooklyn on the first Tuesday of every month. A fee of 10 bucks covers assistance and access to sewing machines, thread, fabric, scissors and a variety of material to help you create customized costumes, clothes, curtains, puppets, pants, parasols, stuffed animals, capes, or anything else you can imagine.

i dressed as a lab rat who performed tests on humans. above is the label design for my “experimental elixirs” (aka whiskey). check out the costume and shot of the bottles here.
