i am often underwhelmed and disenchanted by contemporary art. as a creative person, this feeling comes with a certain complex guilt. but every so often, i am astounded by something in such a way that it blows that thought away. the Anthropodino installation by Ernesto Neto at the Park Avenue Armory was one of those things.
a truly interactive piece deserves exclamations: you are allowed to touch it! you are allowed to run around barefoot inside of it! you can be there as long as you like! there is tons of space for everyone to enjoy it! it smells like cloves! and curry!
it is an awesome structure, built in an amazing way, it has a lack of color, it has an abundance of color. little kids are delighted by it, adults of all ages seemed captivated, it would be incredible to be alone inside of it, but was still fun to explore with a group of friends. it was built to withstand the rigors of human curiosity, it sparked conversations between strangers.
in short: rad. i’m glad i got to see this thing on the last day of the exhibition. hooray for restoring my faith in contemporary art!

a graduation card that i made for “double doctor” Alexis M.D/Ph.D. (or flybutter, as she is known on flickr), a pathologist who looks at cells and other teeny things all day under a microscope. unfortunately my trusty epson couldn’t print truly microscopic type, but i still needed a macro lens to check legibility.

I recently had a particularly awesome night at Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse to congratulate Alexis on graduating with an M.D./Ph.D. We ate chopped liver, danced the hora, drank from bottles of vodka frozen in blocks of ice, got majorly kvetched at for having vegetarians in our midst, used all of our willpower not to have a vintage bottle setlzerfight, received souvenir t-shirts, had fresh eggcreams prepared for us, and went crazy for 80’s bar mitzvah sing-a-long favorites, repeatedly ignoring the MC’s claims that “this would be the last song”. Not bad for a Wednesday night.

William Oberlin, Brian Ferrier, Andy Baker and I joined forces on a hole design for The Putting Lot, a new miniature golf course in Bushwick themed around the concept of urban sustainability. Our hole is constructed out of reclaimed materials from Build It Green and  is designed to recreate the rewarding (or potentially frustrating) experience of embarking on a sustainable building project and is named the Geographically Limiting the Origin of Resources Yielded (or G.L.O.R.Y. for short) hole.Come out and play! www.theputtinglot.org
